Fentanyl patch side effects
also sold as Duragesic
This side effect is printed on the FDA label for Fentanyl patch. It was a question in our daily quiz, where you pick the real side effect from four choices.
A deadly overdose from a hot bath or heating pad
Heat makes the skin absorb more drug from the patch. Saunas, hot tubs and electric blankets are on the list too.
“Exposure of the fentanyl transdermal system application site and surrounding area to direct external heat sources, such as heating pads or electric blankets, heat or tanning lamps, sunbathing, hot baths, saunas, hot tubs, and heated water beds may increase fentanyl absorption and has resulted in fatal overdose of fentanyl.”
Keep heat away from the patch and call your doctor if you get a fever. Keep patches, even used ones, away from children.
1,127 reports to the FDA's adverse event system mention accidental overdose. A report is not proof the drug caused it. See the query
